Modern Zen: A Harmonious Fusion of East and West

Designer Peng Li-Yuan's Award-Winning Residential House Design

Modern Zen, a residential house design by Peng Li-Yuan, beautifully integrates Eastern Zen art style with Western modernism. This unique project, which won the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2018, showcases a perfect blend of cultural artistic thinking, functionality, and aesthetics.

The inspiration behind Modern Zen lies in the relationship between life and art. The design combines the simplicity of oriental Zen art with the rational line structure and functional planning of Western modernism. The result is a contemporary style of Zen thinking, reflected in the natural textures of wood and stone, which bring out a sense of calm and tranquility.

Modern Zen is not just a residential house; it is also designed to function as holiday homes and private guest houses. The design had to accommodate family life, ensure privacy, host VIPs, and display artwork in public spaces. The open plan design, combined with a large surface area of wood and stone textures, offers a mansion-style calm atmosphere with a smooth and flexible flow. The art of aesthetics is integrated into considerations of storage, lighting, and color, enabling art and life to become integral parts of the space.

The realization of Modern Zen involved careful planning and innovative design solutions. The flow and layout of the house were divided into two contrasting areas: the show gallery and the living space. This was achieved by using different colors for the floor tiles. The design also incorporated a hollow cabinet design that allows light and vision to penetrate, creating an ambiguous boundary between privacy and openness in the space.

The design also faced several challenges. The main challenge was to meet the conflicting needs for openness and privacy without sacrificing the sense of space. The design also had to create a large amount of artwork storage that showed the aesthetic level of visualization from different perspectives. Another challenge was to subtly integrate Eastern and Western elements without creating a deliberate and abrupt feeling.

Despite these challenges, Modern Zen was successfully realized. The design perfectly displays the artwork through the arrangement of material, hue, light, and shadow. The modernist rational structure with horizontal and vertical lines as the main framework is filled with the simple and profound structure of wood, stone color, cement stripping, etc., emphasized by the natural Zen Buddhist. This skillful blend of cultural artistic thinking of the East and the West has earned Modern Zen the prestigious Silver A' Design Award.

In conclusion, Modern Zen is a testament to Peng Li-Yuan's innovative design thinking and artistic skill. It is a perfect example of how design can integrate art and life, East and West, and openness and privacy into a harmonious whole. The design not only meets the functional needs of a residential house but also serves as an artistic expression of Zen thinking.
